I think I had the "El Capitan" OS and I played it through Porting Kit, but now my MAC was upgraded to Catalina OS (10.15) and I can't play it anymore since Catalina is not supported with Porting Kit (yet). This is why the current state of Steam on macOS Catalina is a shame. Managed to run mini version of steam to see the game list, but also

I have Mojave 10.14.6 on a macbook air.I still haven't bought the game since I cannot access steam in playonmac. There is one exception for me: I was able to get the game playing by double-clicking on Launcher.exe when accessed through "Browse local file" by right-clicking on 'Age of Empires II (2013)' and selecting 'Properties'.. Hopefully this may help others.I am having problems with installing AoE II: DE.
