The scenery is pretty breathtaking!I love the Canadian rockies… the region is like having heaven on earth! This road loops from Canmore back past the Nordic Ski Centre in towards the mountains and then to Highway 40 and back to Canmore or Calgary.

This is the start of the Mount Washington Trail. Where: Chester Lake . You should have enough time in your day to make a few quick stops on the drive back. Pass the parking area and turn right onto a gravel road immediately after crossing a large concrete bridge. I’ve been dying to see this part of Canada.

Continue six miles on a heavily potholed road to a gate. Trailhead: a 60-minute drive (45 km) up the Smith Dorrien (Spray Lakes) road from Canmore; turn left (east) into the parking lot which is directly across from the Burstall Pass parking lot From here, several destinations are at your disposal. It’s an easy day trip from Calgary, Banff, or Canmore and the hike is short enough that you have time to make stops on the drive for photos. Some people were scrabbling up some of the gravel at that was above the lake but I didn’t want to risk sliding down it. Turn right and continue up the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road for 12 miles to the large Middle Fork trailhead parking area on the right. Unlike typical mountain hiking trails, Chester Lake has a nice wide trail allowing groups of people to easily socialize along the way up. To complete this hiking challenge and receive a commemorative pin, all you have to do is complete 6 out of 11 designated trails. If you are into mountain biking, you can use the first 2 km of the trail, the part that is a logging road to bike on.The hike took me 4 hours roundtrip.

Chester Lake is part of Spray Valley Provincial Park and entrance to the trail is free.Besides being a nice hike, the drive to the trail is gorgeous. The wide hiking trail makes Chester Lake perfect for group outings such as a family hike, a stag party hike, team building etc.

This is the toughest part of the trail as it is straight uphill for a bit. The road is marked for Dingford and Dutch Miller Gap. I have an uncle in Alberta, so looks like I need to make a trip to visit him!It looks so pretty there! Once it flattens out it is a bit easier to appreciate the forest and scenery around you.

There is a large meadow here and lots of places to sit and take in the lake. Mount Chester makes for a nice backdrop for any season. The trail starts on an old forest logging road, bikes are only allowed for the first two km's. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a nice lunch and a little photo session. That rating is the avalanche risk on the established snowshoe trail to Chester Lake. For wintertime visits, you can snowshoe or ski up to the lake. A lot of people skip out on this road and just take the direct one to Banff.
