The same experience was had by most of the old tool chests I’ve seen over the years so I’d think ply is a reasonable alternative.On another note, what is that tool chest / cabinet on the work bench in the background? Customer service was not much help and I thought you might want to know about it. It sits in the back of my truck holding all my hand tools & keeping them dry. Schwarz & co used 1/4 saw white oak, mine’s construction grade spruce. Who cares? I did paint the inside – simple off-white from a spray can because the pine was old and stained.
