Kauai and Ohau are the best locations for hiking. Having said that, from a non-biased point of view… it’s very highly unlikely that HPD will be there 24/7. Pack the basics. Ifthey indeed did open it to the public think of the jobs that it would create think of the tourism that it would influence (which correct me if I’m wrong tourism is a one of the biggest revenue streams Hawaii has). Occasionally one of the wooden steps would break just to make the climb more exciting. Bucket list item for sure. However, I am afraid of heights. 3,922 stairs lead up the imposing mountain ridge, often at a vertical incline, with only a hand-rail to catch you from falling into the valley below.. Go somewhere else! It is the safest way to reach that elevation on Oahu.
