This novel opts for quite a different tack in that constructs a virtually ‘untold’ story around a relatively unexplored character from Hellenic mythology.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2018
She has such a unique way of transporting you, effortlessly, into a time of Greek Gods, demigods, Greek heroes and those mortals either willingly, or unwillingly caught in their orbit.
Funny as hell.Saint Peter takes a holiday. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote. But by the end of the novel, even mortals can do what she does. At a beach resort in Aruba.
Oh yeah, men and pigs. She is surrounded by thousands of relatives who are having babies all the time.
The archaeological evidence is sketchy, but the first pussy hat was probably knitted by Circe. Circe's fascination with mortals becomes the book's marrow and delivers its thrilling ending. We work hard to protect your security and privacy. ""Written with power and grace, this enchanting, startling, gripping story casts a spell as strong and magical as any created by the sorceress Circe. In the mythologies she is a never married witch who lives independently of men in a time when no woman did that. Nectar in a Sieve (Signet Classics)

The story also helps those of us who have no more than a passing knowledge of the Greek myths to understand and appreciate them more fully.

The author has obviously done much research, and there are parts of the story that are pure poetry. I liked how she surrounded herself with wild animals but wasn’t impressed with how quickly she invited Odysseus to her bed and allowed him and his men to spend a year on her island. [Circe is] a sly, petulant, and finally commanding voice that narrates the entirety of Miller's dazzling second novel….Readers will relish following the puzzle of this unpromising daughter of the sun god Helios and his wife, Perse, who had negligible use for their child….Expect Miller's readership to mushroom like one of Circe's spells. ""[Miller] gives voice to Circe as a multifaceted and evolving character...'Circe' is very pleasurable to read, combining lively versions of familiar tales and snippets of other, related standards with a highly psychologized, redemptive and ultimately exculpatory account of the protagonist herself. Wow, scary. Even her magic is trivialized. ""A retelling of ancient Greek lore gives exhilarating voice to a witch... ""Spellbinding..Miller has created a daring feminist take on a classic narrative; although the setting is a mystical world of gods, monsters, and nymphs, the protagonist at its heart is like any of us.
