Started around 4pm and the trail was mostly empty. A lot of it is not shaded, so bring a sunhat! The highlight of this hike will be the dramatic views of the red rock formations angling skyward.

You will stay left here and continue to climb up towards the ridge. It also connects to the Carpenter Peak trail and the South Rim trail, so if you feel the need to challenge yourself or make your hike last a little longer, it's easy to add some distance.Roxborough has limited winter hours, and they lock the gates at closing time, so make sure you're aware of the time while you're there. When you crest the rim and look down into the valley it is jaw-droppingly beautiful. You will rejoin the trail at this point on your return tripAs you climb up the rim take a break and look behind you for spectacular views of the Red Sandstone "Fountain Formation" that make this a special place. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. There is an alternate trail-head near this larger parking lot as well.

Saw a bear around 5pm in the valley so stay alert! This is a state park so you will need to purchase a day pass for $8, or an annual pass for around $80. While that altitude might not exactly take your breath away, the views from the top certainly will. This will be a casually-paced hike. Lone Rock Campground, located along the South Platte River, boasts spectacular views and top-notch fly fishing waters. Trail was not too busy on a weekend (I entered around 10 and didn't have to wait more than 15 minutes to enter.) If you want a good family hike that's not too difficult for younger kids, or if you need a less intense trail, that is still some good exercise, try this one!
The park is one of the best places near Denver to encounter wildlife. Be on the look out for the signs warning about the poison ivy that grows at the beginning of this trail.The Willow Creek trail branches off to your right.
